Did Someone Say Competition?

Every young art enthusiast worth his money has his eyes set on Japan; after all, why not? It is the epicenter of subcultures and all things cool.

Remember, if it is cool in Japan, it is cool for the world 5 years later. So get ready for some sushi and ninjas. This competition has the potential to turn not just your year but your life around. Get out of the mid-year slump and make 2015 happen!

  • If you are a UAE or GCC national, Japan is calling for you.
  • Art Jameel in partnership with Crossway Foundation recently launched a competition to find talented young artists, designers, photographers and filmmakers to win the creative journey of a lifetime to Japan.
  • This year’s competition is open to 18-25 year old nationals and residents of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and the United Kingdom. Eight winners will have the opportunity to travel to Japan in November 2015 where they will experience one of the most inspiring cultures in the world.

Kuwaiti visual artist, Dr Monira Al Qadiri, has been appointed Artistic Lead on this project.

“It has always been my dream to share my knowledge and experience of Japanese art and culture with younger practitioners from the region. Being in Japan can stimulate the mind of any artist in a myriad of ways, and this journey can become a gateway to endless sources of inspiration for years to come.”

The Crossway Foundation was founded by a group of artists who believed in the power of journeys to inspire better understanding and collaboration across borders, and to release the world-changing potential of young creatives.

The original journey took place in 2002, when Crossway Foundation CEO and Founder, Stephen Stapleton, made his own trip across the Middle East along with three other artists.

Based out of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Abdul Latif Jameel, President of the ALJ Group and his son Fady Mohammed Abdul Latif Jameel, President of ALJCI International, both passionate lovers of the art decided to start the journey of ART JAMEEL. Their cultural journey started when they decided to partner with the V&A Museum in London to establish the Jameel Gallery for Islamic Art. Next step, they launched the first Jameel Prize in 2006; an international award for contemporary art and design inspired by Islamic tradition.

In Saudi Arabia, they are the founding partner of two initiatives: ‘Edge of Arabia’ and ‘Arabian Wings’; both providing a platform for contemporary art from Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.

In Dubai, they support ‘The Archive’, a library and café with a busy events calendar that is dedicated to give a fresh perspective to Middle Eastern and North African Art & Literature.
